Fourteen garment factories in Gazipur still remain shut down, while workers from one factory staged a protest over unpaid salaries, blocking traffic on the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway.
According to industrial police and workers, Full Ever BD Limited, a garment factory in the Chhaydana area, has been at the center of the unrest.
Workers began protesting on September 10, demanding one month of overdue wages.
However, instead of addressing the issue, the factory management announced its closure on September 12 without clearing the pending salaries. While the wage issues at most factories in Gazipur were resolved by last Monday, the employees of Full Ever BD Limited remain unpaid.
On Wednesday, around 11:00am, about 50 workers gathered in front of the factory to demand their overdue salaries. The protest eventually spilled onto the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway, causing a disruption in traffic flow.
Mosharraf Hossain, Assistant Superintendent of Police of Tongi Zone in Gazipur Industrial Zone-2, confirmed that 14 factories in the area were closed on Wednesday. Full Ever BD Limited was among them, with workers demanding their one-month salary.
