Former footballer Tabith Awal, also a former vice president of the Bangladesh Football Federation, on Monday his candidacy for the post of BFF president
He made the announcement during a press conference at a hotel in Dhaka.
Tabith, who served as BFF vice president twice – in 2012 and 2016, lost his bid for the same post in 2020.
Despite the setback, he is now vying for the presidency in his fourth consecutive election.
“I’ve competed in the last three elections, and I’m running again—this time for the position of president. I’m confident in my chances,” Tabith said.
While he held back on revealing his full election manifesto, Tabith expressed his belief in his ability to elevate football in Bangladesh.
"I will present my election promises soon. But for now, I can assure you that if I become president, I will bring surprises to the field. I am determined to take football to the next level," he added.
Reflecting on his previous tenure, Tabith noted that he had not faced any major obstacles while serving as vice president. He also highlighted his role as chairman of the BFF’s technical committee, during which many local football coaches were developed under his leadership.
Tabith is known for his varied roles—as a businessman, a member of the BNP’s national committee, and a former two-time candidate for the mayoral post of Dhaka North City.
He is also a football organiser and sponsor, previously backing Feni FC, and now supporting second-tier club Noufel Sporting.
Touching on the recent FIFA corruption scandal that tarnished BFF’s reputation, Tabith acknowledged, “Football is still alive in this country, with many kids playing the sport. But there are significant gaps in BFF’s capabilities. The national team’s performance hasn’t been up to par, and our branding has suffered. There is much work to be done in these areas.”
