Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) on Saturday said the commission didn't issue any directive to shut down mobile network or slow down broadband services in Khagrachhari and Rangamati districts.
A media statement of the telecom regulator said, mobile network and internet services were disrupted in some parts of the districts due to cut of optical fibre and power disruption during the untoward situation.
BTRC said that clashes between rival groups took place on Thursday in Dighinala of Khagrachari district and at that time 16 network towers of mobile operator Robi went out of order as the optical fibre of NTTN operators-Summit Communications Limited and Bangladesh Telecommunications Company Limited (BTCL) were damaged after arson attack.
BTRC said, it was not possible to repair all the towers immediately amid the prevailing situation, BTRC said.
Robi has about 150 network towers in the district and the operator has managed to restore 14 towers into operation till Friday. All towers are expected to be operational soon, it said.
BTRC said, there are 72 towers of Teletalk in Khagrachari district, out of which 29 towers- including 23 for power disruption and six for other reasons- are out of order currently.
BTRC said, broadband internet services were operational in Khagrachhari and Rangamati districts at the time of conflict on Friday.
However, due to the damage of cable and power disruption, a small number of users are facing trouble in some areas.
The press release said ISP operators are working hard for restoring internet service through generators.
BTRC regretted and apologized for the temporary inconvenience of the internet subscribers in the backdrop of the prevailing situation.
