No Modi-Yunus meeting on India’s UNGA agenda

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is not expected to meet with Bangladesh's interim government chief, Muhammad Yunus, on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) next week.

The Hindustan Times reported that officials familiar with the issue informed it of the latest development.

Earlier this month, Dhaka formally requested a meeting during the General Assembly, which both leaders are set to attend.

Bangladesh was reportedly hoping that a face-to-face discussion might ease some of the tensions that have surfaced in bilateral ties following the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government.

But officials at the South Block told Hindustan Times that the list of India's agenda during the UNGA does not feature any meeting between Modi and Yunus.

"The Prime Minister will have some bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the General Assembly in New York, but a meeting with Bangladesh’s interim chief isn’t on the schedule," one of the officials said.

Yunus, in a recent interview, criticised ousted prime minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina for commenting on Bangladesh’s political developments while in exile in India and suggested that Bangladesh could seek her extradition. He also argued that India should move past the “narrative” that only Hasina’s Awami League is non-Islamist.

Additionally, foreign affairs adviser of the interim government, Touhid Hossain, has raised the possibility of seeking Hasina’s extradition, a move he acknowledged would place India in an "embarrassing situation." Hasina fled to India after stepping down on August 5 and is currently at an undisclosed location in the country.

India’s leadership, while granting her asylum on short notice, has kept tight-lipped about any potential Bangladeshi request for extradition, calling it a hypothetical issue.
