Ex-BCL leader dies after being beaten at JU

A former Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) leader of Jahangirnagar University, who was beaten up by the university students on Wednesday afternoon, died while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Savar, Dhaka.

The deceased, Shamim Ahmed alias Shamim Molla, was the son of Yaz Uddin Molla from Ashulia union in Savar. He served as the organising secretary of the BCL’s JU unit and was a student from the 39th batch of the university.

He died around 10:00 pm at Gonoshasthaya Samaj Vittik Medical College Hospital, confirmed Md Abu Bakar Siddik, Inspector of Ashulia police station.  

Sources said there were allegations against him for playing an active role in the attack on protesting students at the Vice-Chancellor's residence on the night of July 15. The students detained him near the Prantik gate area of the university on Wednesday afternoon, beat him, and later handed him over to the proctorial body. When he was taken to the university's security branch, he was beaten again. Subsequently, the Ashulia police arrested Shamim Molla after being informed by the proctorial body and admitted him to the hospital in Savar.

Selimuzzaman Selim, a doctor of the hospital said that when Shamim was brought in, he was found to be dead. No serious injuries were noted on his body.

Sudipta Shaheen, chief officer of the university's security branch, stated that upon receiving news of the mob beating, security officers went to the scene, rescued the former student, and took him to the proctor's office. He was later handed over to the police regarding the previous case filed against him.

Abu Bakar Siddik, Inspector of the Ashulia police station, confirmed that a young man who had been beaten at the university was rescued and admitted to the hospital. He later learned that the man died while undergoing treatment. Initially, it was reported that he died due to the beatings, but the cause of death will be confirmed after the post-mortem report is received.
