Adviser orders crackdown on drug lords

Home Affairs Adviser Lt Gen (retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury has directed the Department of Narcotics Control (DNC) to step up efforts in targeting major drug traffickers and criminal masterminds.

During a meeting with senior DNC officials at Dhaka's Segunbagicha on Tuesday, he emphasised the need to go beyond low-level offenders and focus on dismantling the leadership of drug networks.

The adviser called for reinforced joint operations, requiring daily progress reports to ensure accountability.

He stressed that the department’s success will be evaluated based on its ability to curb the influence of these drug lords.

He also highlighted the importance of eliminating corruption within the department, urging officials to resist bribery and unethical practices.

"Drug-related crimes devastate families, societies, and the nation. A change in mindset is critical to achieving real progress," said Jahangir Alam.

Furthermore, the adviser acknowledged the need for better resources, noting that while department officials are provided with uniforms, they lack the necessary weapons and tools for effective action. He proposed arming DNC personnel and incorporating police support in high-risk operations to ensure successful outcomes.

The meeting was attended by Senior Secretary Md Mashiur Rahman NDC of the Security Services Division and Director General Khondkar Mostafizur Rahman NDC of the Narcotics Control Department, alongside other key officials.
