Attorney General Md Asaduzzaman has stressed the need for brining reforms to Article 70 of the Constitution, which he says undermines the balance of power in Bangladesh's governance structure.
According to him, the current push to reform the constitution is intended to ensure better balance among governance, law, and the judiciary.
Speaking on the issue, Asaduzzaman highlighted that the current interim government is operating within constitutional boundaries and that all procedures are being followed according to the law.
He also advocated for constitutional reforms to reduce the Prime Minister's authority and increase the powers of the President.
"As Attorney General, I believe Article 70 has placed significant control of the legal, administrative, and judicial branches in the hands of one individual," Asaduzzaman said, sharing his personal view.
He expressed optimism that the Constitution Reform Commission would address these concerns in its review.
He further praised the Chief Adviser's ongoing initiatives to reform both the judiciary and the Constitution, calling them "positive steps."
Asaduzzaman also emphasized the importance of judicial reforms, including granting the Chief Justice greater authority, to allow judges to work independently.
Article 70 of the Constitution states that a Member of Parliament elected as a candidate of a political party will lose their seat if they resign from the party or vote against it in Parliament. However, they would not be disqualified from running in future elections.
