The death toll from a fire following an explosion at a ship-breaking yard in Sitakunda upazila, Chattogram, has risen to two, as another victim died early Monday.
The deceased, Khairul Islam, 21, suffered from 80% burn injuries.
He died while undergoing treatment at Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery (SHNIBPS).
Confirming the matter, Tariqul Islam, resident physician at SHNIBPS, stated that the other injured individuals who are undergoing treatment at the hospital are in critical condition.
Jakir Hossain, Khairul’s brother-in-law, said Khairul had been working at the shipyard for three years.
Earlier, a worker named Ahmed Ullah, 38, died while undergoing treatment at SHNIBPS around 1 am on Saturday.
However, the six other people who also suffered burn injuries are: Barkat Ullah, 23, with 60% burns; Anwar Hossain, 50, with 25% burns; Al Amin, 36, with 80% burns; Jahangir Alam, 48, with 70% burns; Habib, 36, with 45% burns; and Abul Kashem, 39, with 70% burns.
The explosion occurred around 12:30 pm on Saturday at the SN Corporation ship-breaking yard, owned by Shaukat Ali Chowdhury, located on the sea coast in the Shitalpur Tentultala area of Sonaichari Union, Sitakunda Upazila. Twelve workers were burnt and seriously injured in the incident.
