In a swift operation, police arrested 10 people after they attempted to rob several banks in a multipurpose building in Gulshan-2, Dhaka, early Saturday.
Police said a group of robbers, armed and riding 50 motorbikes and two vehicles, stormed into the Finance Square Building around 1:00 am, holding security guards hostage at gunpoint.
Acting on a tip-off, a joint forces team rushed to the scene, surrounded the building, and arrested 10 of the robbers while the rest managed to escape.
The Finance Square Building houses several banks, including Padma Bank and Exim Bank, as well as other private organizations.
According to Gulshan Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Touhid Ahmed, the attempted robbery targeted Exim Bank, and the bank authorities have since visited the police station to file a case. The 10 arrested suspects will be sent to court in connection with the case.
When asked whether any money had been stolen, the OC stated that the details were still under investigation, and the names of the detainees were not immediately released.
Samsun Tamanna Jannat Shimla, Vice President and Relationship Manager of the Exim Bank Women’s Branch in Finance Square, confirmed the attempted robbery, adding that a formal complaint is being lodged with the police on behalf of the bank.
