The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has directed all banks and financial institutions to provide details of the financial transactions of the owners and family members of five major conglomerates.
The conglomerates are Beximco Group, Orion Group, Bashundhara Group, Summit Group, and Nassa Group.
The Central Intelligence Cell (CIC) of the NBR specifically requested information on Salman F Rahman, Vice Chairman of Beximco; Nazrul Islam Mazumder, Chairman of Nassa Group; Mohammed Aziz Khan, Chairman of Summit Power International; Ahmed Akbar Khan, Chairman of Bashundhara Group; and Mohammad Obaidul Karim, Chairman of Orion Group. The request also extends to individuals associated with them and firms owned by them.
This request was issued in a letter on Thursday (August 22), as confirmed by NBR officials.
The tax administration said that its CIC has initiated a special inquiry into allegations of tax evasion by individuals who have amassed considerable wealth.
The tax intelligence cell has compiled a list of suspected tax dodgers based on specific information and analysis of media reports.
These conglomerates are known to have benefited significantly from the recently ousted government. In a meeting at the Prime Minister’s Office, the owners of these groups reportedly pledged their unwavering support to Sheikh Hasina.
