18 lakh people affected by flood, one dead: Ministry

At least 17,96,248 people in six districts have so far been affected by flood. One person died after being drowned in the flood water in Feni. 

This information was confirmed in a report prepared by the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief on the flood situation as of Thursday morning.

“According to the data of the meteorological agencies, moderate to heavy rainfall is expected in the north-eastern region of the country and adjoining uplands over the next 48 hours. The water levels in the main rivers in the northeastern and eastern parts of the country are rising,” the report said.

It said the number of flood-affected districts is six. Cumilla, Feni, Chattogram, Khagrachari, Noakhali, Moulvibazar districts have been affected by floods. A total of 43 upazilas have been inundated by the flood water. 

However, a total of 1,89,663 families in six districts have become waterlogged. The number of affected people is 17,96,248. A total of 1,359 shelter centres have been opened to provide shelter to the flood-affected victims. A total of 17,882 people and 3,486 cattle have been sheltered, the report said.

Besides, a total of 309 medical teams are in operation to provide medical services to the victims of six districts.

According to the report, the relief distribution programme is underway in the flood-affected districts. A total of Tk 1 crore 42 lakh has been allocated to the six flood-affected districts. Besides, 8,550 tons of rice and 8,000 packets of dry food have been allocated.

In addition, the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief has informed that there are sufficient relief supplies in all the districts of the country.
