The High Court on Thursday will hear a writ petition filed seeking ban on Awami League (AL) and cancellation of its registration as a political party for indiscriminate killing of students and commoners, during the quota reform protest and mass uprising.
Police are on high alert across the country, including the capital to thwart any attempts to destabilise country’s law and order situation over hearing of the writ.
According to the sources of the police headquarters, necessary security measures have been taken to deal with the chaotic situation and violent activities following the hearing of the writ filed seeking ban on Awami League and its associate organizations.
Intelligence sources said, in response to the hearing of the writ, the Awami League and its associate organizations’ members may engage in violent activities including attacks, vandalism and arson.
Earlier on Monday, Arifur Rahman Murad Bhuiyan, Executive Director of rights group Sarda Society, on Monday filed the writ, pleading to rename all the institutions across the country named after ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
The Cabinet Secretary, Secretary of the Public Division of the President’s Office, Anti-Corruption Commission Chairman, Law Secretary, Election Commission Secretary, Bank and Financial Institutions Secretary, National Board of Revenue Chairman, Bangladesh Bank Governor, BFIU chief and the coordinators and the assistant coordinators of the Anti-Discriminations Student Movement were made respondents to the writ petition.
The petitioner also pleaded for the repatriation of Tk11 lakh crore allegedly smuggled out of the country and the removal of officials hired on contract during the Awami League administration.
