Govt prefers trying July massacre at ICT: Asif Nazrul

The interim government has decided to prosecute those responsible for the July massacre during student protests at the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT), according to Asif Nazrul, the adviser for law, justice, and parliamentary affairs.

During a press conference at his office on Wednesday (August 14), Asif Nazrul announced that several cases have already been filed related to the massacres and shootings that occurred during the quota reform movement. He noted that there has been widespread demand from student organisations and human rights groups to investigate these events as potential crimes against humanity.

"We believe it is possible to prosecute those responsible for the July massacre under the International Crimes Tribunal," Nazrul said, adding that the investigation team will work under the supervision of the United Nations.

Asif Nazrul emphasised that no one, including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, will be spared if found involved in these killings. "We are relying on the International Crimes (Tribunals) Act of 1973, which was later revised in 2009 and 2013. Our preliminary research suggests that it is possible to bring to justice all individuals involved in these murders, whether they gave orders or provided assistance," he said.

Asif explained that the tribunal consists of an investigation agency and a prosecution team, which the interim government is working to reorganise. "We plan to form the court soon and will ensure that our investigation is conducted with full transparency and impartiality under UN supervision," he added.

The adviser also mentioned plans to meet with the UN Resident Coordinator in Bangladesh to seek their cooperation, as well as contacting relevant UN agencies to facilitate the investigation.

Nazrul asserted that the investigation will extend to all levels of responsibility, including the highest officials from the previous government. "This process will not only focus on crimes committed by the police and Chhatra League but will also examine the potential involvement of top-level individuals," he said. "If the prime minister of the fallen government or others are found responsible, we will ensure they are held accountable."
