Biden quitting presidential race a ‘coup’, says Trump

Donald Trump called Joe Biden’s decision to quit the presidential race a “coup of a president of the United States” in a talk with Elon Musk that finally went ahead after a “massive” cyber attack.

Trump claimed the US president was forced out of the White House race by his party last month. Kamala Harris replaced Biden as the Democratic nominee, but Trump said she was “as bad as Biden”.

“This was a coup of a president of the United States, he didn’t want to leave and they said, ‘We can do it, the nice way or we can do it the hard way,’” he told Musk.

The pair were scheduled to speak on X, Musk’s social media platform, at 1am BST (8pm ET), but the event only got under way 45 minutes later, due to technical issues caused by a cyber attack.

“There appears to be a massive DDOS attack on X,” Musk said, referring to a tactic used by computer hackers to overwhelm a server with internet traffic.

The debacle recalled the glitch-plagued campaign launch of Ron DeSantis, the Florida Governor, last year, which was put down to the platform struggling handle the sheer number of people tuning in.

At the time, Trump gleefully accused his Republican rival of a “catastrophic failure to launch”.
