2 cops suspended over Abu Sayeed’s death

Two police members have been suspended over the death of Begum Rokeya University student Abu Sayeed.

The suspended cops are assistant sub-inspector Amir Hossain of Rangpur Metropolitan Police Lines, and constable Sujan Chandra of Tajhat police station.

Rangpur Metropolitan Police’s deputy commissioner (crimes), Abu Maruf Hossain, confirmed the matter on Saturday afternoon.

He said the two police members were suspended after allegations against them were found in primary investigation.

Further actions will be taken against the duo upon receiving the final probe report, he added.

On July 16, Abu Sayeed, 25, a 12th batch student in the English department at Begum Rokeya University, was shot dead in a clash between students and police during the quota reform movement.

However, police in the statement of the case over the death mentioned that he died after being hit by brickbats threw by the protesters.
