BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Tuesday said the decision to ban Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir over violence centring the quota reform protests is ill motivated and it aims to divert the focus of the people.
Fakhrul made the remark in a press conference at BNP chairperson’s political office at Gulshan in Dhaka.
He also urged to withdraw curfew and send the military back to the barrack immediately.
Earlier on Monday, the 14-party alliance led by Awami League in a meeting decided to ban Jamaat-e-Islami and Chhatra Shibir.
"The meeting of the 14-party alliance unanimously decided to ban Jamaat and Shibir to eliminate anti-state evil forces for the sake of the country," AL General Secretary Obaidul Quader had said.
Workers' Party President Rashed Khan Menon had said the government will implement the decision soon.
