DU endorses UGC’s decision of closure

Dhaka University (DU) was closed for an indefinite period following clashes between Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activists and the students demanding quota reform in government jobs.

The residential students were also asked to vacate their respective halls within 6pm on Wednesday.

The DU authorities took the decision in an emergency syndicate meeting with Vice Chancellor Professor Dr ASM Maksud Kamal in the chair this noon following the directives of the University Grants Commission (UGC).

In the beginning of the meeting, DU authorities paid homage to the deceased, who were killed during the quota reform movement, and conveyed deep sympathy to the bereaved families.

The DU authorities also took the decision of giving necessary assistance including medical treatment to the injured teachers and students.

They urged the government to find a logical solution to the existing quota system.

Earlier on Tuesday, six people were killed and more than 400 others injured in clashes between Chhatra League activists and quota reform protesters in Rangpur, Chattogram, and Dhaka.

The UGC in a notice, signed by its Secretary Dr Ferdous Jaman, gave a direction to the vice chancellors of all public and private universities to keep their respective institutions closed until further notice.
