A student of Begum Rokeya University in Rangpur was killed during a clash with police in Rangpur on Tuesday.
Police and Chhatra League activists clashed with students protesting for quota reform in Rangpur on Tuesday demanding reform of quota in government jobs. At one stage, the police fired rubber bullets and teargas shells leaving scores injured.
A student of Begum Rokeya University was pronounced dead on arrival to a hospital around 2:30pm.
The deceased, Abu Saeed,25, was a 12th batch student in the English department at Begum Rokeya University.
Witnesses said that in the afternoon, the protesters marched towards the university campus from Lalbagh in the city. When they attempted to enter the campus, police intervened, leading to a confrontation.
During the clash, police fired rubber bullets at the students, injuring several. Abu Saeed succumbed to his injuries after being taken to the hospital.
Rangpur Superintendent of Police Mohammad Shahjahan confirmed the fatality to Jago News, stating that a student was killed in the firing.
D. Mohammad Yunus Ali, Director of Rangpur Medical College Hospital, informed Jago News, "Several students were brought to the hospital with injuries. One of them was found dead.”
