Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina revealed that a former peon of hers has amassed Tk 400 crore in wealth, highlighting the extent of corruption.
Addressing journalists' questions about Syed Abed Ali, a driver for the Public Service Commission (PSC) who also owns substantial wealth, she remarked, "I had a peon in my house. He is now the owner of Tk 400 crore. He can’t travel without a helicopter. He was later caught and investigations were conducted."
The prime minister expressed her frustration, saying, "How can I explain how a driver became the owner of so many crores of taka? Now you know because we are exposing their misdeeds. Previously, you were not aware."
These statements were made during a press conference at Ganobhaban on Sunday (July 14) afternoon, following her visit to China.
Sheikh Hasina emphasised the government’s ongoing efforts against corruption, stating, "First, we fought against militancy. Now, with militancy under control, we are tackling corruption by apprehending wrongdoers. This will continue."
She also addressed concerns about the government's image, saying, "Many people tell me that the government's image will be damaged if we do this. I don’t think so. Those who are committing crimes and engaging in corruption must be caught. There will be no exceptions."
