Students of Comilla University (CoU) and police chased each other on Thursday afternoon when the students took to the streets demanding the reformation of the quota system in the government jobs.
The incident took place in Kotbari area on the outskirts of the town when the students brought out a procession around 3 pm and were moving toward the Dhaka-Chattogram Highway as part of the 'Bangla Blockade' programme.
Sadar Dakshin Model Police Station officer-in-charge Mohammad Alamgir Bhuiyan said police requested the students to return to the campus after they brought out a procession but they refused and attacked the law enforcers.
Later, police fired tear gas shells to bring the situation under control, he said.
Several cops were injured during the melee, the OC also said. But he could not mention the names of them immediately.
Students observed nationwide Bangla Blockade on Wednesday and announced to continue it today from 3 pm.
Students have, however, been protesting in the capital and different parts of the country for several days to demand the reformation of the quota system in the government jobs.
