Bagha municipality mayor Akkas Ali arrested in Dhaka

Detectives have arrested Rajshahi’s Bagha municipality mayor Md Akkas Ali from Dhaka in a case filed for the murder of Bagha upazila unit of Awami League (AL) General Secretary Ashraful Islam Babul.

He is the main accused in the murder case. Apart from, there are 22 cases and 17 general diaries filed against him.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Habibur Rahman confirmed the matter on Friday night.  

He said Akkas was arrested in a murder case filed with Bagha Police Station. Later, he was handed over to the Bagha police.  

On June 22, Bagha upazila unit of AL formed a human chain in front of the upazila parishad premises bringing allegations of irregularities and corruption against Akkash. At that time, Bagha upazila AL leader Ashraful Islam Babul was critically injured in an attack led by the municipality mayor. Babul died while undergoing treatment Rajshahi Medical College Hospital on June 26. Later, Akkas fled to Dhaka and went into hiding.

In this connection, Aminul Islam, Officer-in-charge of Bagha Police Station, said a case was filed making Akkas the prime accused in connection with the murder of Babul. A total of eight people including Akkas’ nephew union parishad chairman and Juba League leader Merazur Islam Meraz were arrested so far.
