Quader postpones meeting with protesting university teachers

Awami League General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader has postponed a meeting with the leaders of the Federation of Bangladesh University Teachers Association, who are protesting the new universal pension scheme ‘Prottoy’ recently issued by the Finance Ministry.

The meeting was scheduled to be held on Thursday morning.

Confirming the matter to Jago News, Nizamul Haque, Secretary General of the Federation of Bangladesh University Teachers Association, said we had a meeting with Obaidul Quader today but it was postponed. The date of the meeting will be announced later.

However, the indefinite strike of teachers and employees of public universities is underway across the country for the fourth consecutive day on Thursday, demanding their exclusion from the “discriminatory” pension scheme.

The Universal Pension Scheme started its journey on August 17, 2023 with four schemes: Prabashi, Pragati, Suraksha, and Equality.

On March 13 this year, the government introduced the ‘Prottoy’ scheme for employees who join public universities and other organisations that fall under the scheme from 1 July 2024 onwards.
