Narsingdi’s expelled Jubo Mohila League leader Shamima Nur Papia was released from jail on bail on Monday evening.
She walked out of Cumilla Central Jail at 6am after the bail order reached the jail authorities, said Senior Jail Superintendent Mohammad Abdullah Al-Mamun.
On February 22, 2020, the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested Papia and her husband, along with two of their accomplices, at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka with counterfeit banknotes, foreign currencies and cash.
RAB later raided their two luxurious flats in the capital’s Indira Road area and recovered a foreign-made pistol, two magazines, 20 bullets, five bottles of foreign liquor and Taka 58.41 lakh in cash, among other things.
Three cases were filed against them - two at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station under the Arms Act and the Special Powers Acts and another with Airport Police under the Special Powers Act-1974.
On August 4, 2020, the Anti-Corruption Commission filed a case against Papia and her husband for embezzling Tk 6.24 crore.
On July 3, 2023, Papia was shifted from Kashimpur Central Jail in Gazipur to Cumilla Central Jail following an allegation of torturing a fellow inmate.
