Hangman Shahjahan Bhuiyan dies

Former chief hangman of Dhaka Central Jail Shahjahan Bhuiyan has passed away.

He breathed his last on Monday while undergoing treatment at Shaheed Suhrawary Medical College Hospital in Dhaka. 

Shahjahan’s sister Feroza Begum confirmed the death to Jago News. 

She said her brother complained of chest pain and was admitted to the hospital on Sunday night where he died.

Earlier on June 18, 2023, former chief hangman of Dhaka Central Jail Shahjahan was released after serving 32 years in prison.  

His sentence was commuted to 32 from 42 years for his good works in prison. He was arrested in 1991. He was then kept at Manikganj jail.

Shahjahan was born in 1950 at Isakhali village at Palash upazila in Narsingdi.

According to the prison source, Shahjahan was an experienced hangman who executed 26 death-row convicts in different prisons of the country in the past including the much-talked about killers of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and four war criminals.

He was convicted in two criminal cases. He was awarded 12 years’ jail in 1992 in an arms case. He was jailed for 30 years in another case.
