NBR official Matiur leaves country

National Board of Revenue (NBR) official Md Matiur Rahman left the country on Sunday amid allegations of illegally amassing wealth.

A source in NBR said he went to India through Akhaura land port and may go to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) from there.

An influential syndicate assisted him in leaving the country, the source said.

It was learned that Mushfiqur Rahman Ifat, who went viral on social media buying a goat at Tk 15 lakh before Eid-ul-Azha, his sister Iftima Rahman Madhabi, and his mother Shammi Akter also left the country and went to Malaysia after the Eid. Shammi Akhtar is the second wife of Matiur, and Ifat is his son.

On Sunday, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) said it on June 4 decided to launch a probe into the allegations of illegally amassing wealth by Matiur.

Earlier, the anti-graft body conducted inquiries four times in the same allegations against him.

Matiur Rahman, president of the NBR's Customs, Excise and VAT Appellate Tribunal, was removed from his post on Sunday following the allegations and attached to the Internal Resources Division (IRD) of the Finance Ministry.
