Pacemaker installed in Khaleda's heart

A 'pacemaker' has been placed in the heart of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka.

Her personal physician AZM Zahid Hossain confirmed the matter on Sunday evening.

He said, "Madam (Khaleda Zia) had heart issues from before and blocks were found in her heart where a ring (stent) had been installed. Considering everything and as per the medical board's decision, a pacemaker was placed in her heart a while ago."

A pacemaker is an electrical device for stimulating or steadying the heartbeat or reestablishing the rhythm of an arrested heart.

Khaleda Zia was admitted to the Critical Care Unit (CCU) at the hospital early Saturday as per the advice of her physicians.

Earlier on May 1, she was admitted to the hospital's Coronary Care Unit (CCU) to remove water from her lungs and discharged after two weeks, a source in the party had said.

On March 31, she was admitted to the same facility as per the advice of the medical board formed for her treatment and returned home on April 2 after necessary health checkups.

Khaleda Zia has been suffering from arthritis, diabetes, kidney, lung, and eye issues for a long time.

She also experienced bleeding in the digestive tract and liver cirrhosis later in November.
