A court in Narayanganj on Friday sent Maksud Hossain, newly elected chairman of Bandar upazila of the district, to jail in a dowry case filed by his second wife.
Judge Umme Saraban Tahura of the district Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal passed the order rejecting his bail plea, the court inspector of police, Md Abdur Rashid, told Jago News.
Earlier on April 23, Maksud's second wife Sultana Begum filed a petition in the tribunal to file a case against him on the allegation of torturing her for dowry.
After a hearing on the day, the court asked Bandar Police Station to investigate the allegations.
On the following day, a case was recorded with the police station under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act.
However, Maksud Hossain was elected chairman of Bandar upazila on May 8.
