Voting underway in 156 upazilas in second phase

The second phase of the sixth upazila parishad election is underway in 156 upazilas across the country.

Voting began at 8am. It will continue until 4pm.

Atiar Rahman, Deputy Secretary of the Election Management Wing of the Election Commission, told Jago News that a total of 1,824 candidates are competing in the second phase. Among them, 603 are vying for the post of chairman, 693 for vice chairman and 598 for the post of female vice chairman.

Earlier on May 8, the first phase of the sixth upazila parishad election in 139 upazilas was held across the country.

Only 36 per cent of votes were cast in the first phase, as most opposition parties, including the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), have boycotted the polls.

The upazila election will take place in four phases. Elections in the third phase will be held on May 29, and in the fourth phase on June 5.
