Couple gets life for domestic help murder in Dhaka

A court in Dhaka has sentenced a man and his wife to life-term imprisonment for the murder of a domestic help in the capital.

The lifers are Nazrul Islam and his wife Rabeya Akter. They were also fined Tk 20,000 each, and in default, they will have to serve six months more in jail.

Judge Md Iqbal Hossain of Dhaka Special Judge Court-5 delivered the verdict on Tuesday. The accused were present on the dock during the pronouncement of the verdict.

The case statement said Shilpi Begum, 11, would work in the house of Nazrul Islam, a resident of North Kamalapur Kabi Jashim Uddin Road under Motijheel Police Station area.

On February 22, 2006, Shilpi's mother was informed through an unknown number that she was admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Going there, she saw Shilpi in critical condition and came to learn from adjacent people that Nazrul and his wife hit her with iron rods and sticks shutting the door, leaving her seriously injured. After three days, she died.

Later, the victim's father Sirajul Islam filed a case with Motijheel Police Station in this connection.
