Khairul Kabir Khokan, joint secretary general of BNP and its Narsingdi district unit president, has been released from prison after six months.
He walked out of Keraniganj Central Jail, Dhaka around 12:30 pm on Wednesday.
The district unit BNP general secretary Manzur-e-Elahi, its member Rafiqul Amin Bhuiyan, and other leaders and activists welcomed him with floral wreaths at the jail gate.
On January 26, 2023, the central Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal approved a five-member partial committee for its Narsingdi district unit where general secretary post aspirant Main Uddin Bhuiyan was made senior vice president.
Being aggrieved by the decision, his followers set the district BNP office on fire and carried out vandalism there.
Later, those who did not get any posts in the committee staged demonstrations and formed human chain programs in different places demanding the cancellation of the body.
In continuation, expelled leaders of JCD brought a demonstration procession on May 25 with more than 100 motorcycles seeking to scrap the new committee.
When the procession entered the road of the makeshift office of the district BNP at Chinishpur, miscreants opened fire on them, leaving Sadiqur Rahman, former joint convener of the district unit Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) and an expelled leader, and his follower Ashraful Haque, 22, injured.
They were taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where the on-duty doctors declared them dead.
Later, Sadiqur's brother Altaf Hossain filed a case against 30 BNP men of the district unit, including Khairul Kabir Khokan and his wife Shirin Sultana.
Following the case filing, Khokan was arrested from a house in the capital Dhaka on October 25, 2023.
