The Election Commission (EC) has postponed Jamalpur's Sarishabari upazila parishad election scheduled to be held on Wednesday.
The commission issued a letter in this regard, the district election officer Mohammad Shaniazzaman Talukder confirmed on Tuesday afternoon.
The letter said the EC on Sunday scrapped the candidacy of chairman candidate Md Rafiqul Islam for violating the electoral code of conduct.
On Monday, he filed a writ petition in the High Court (HC) against the decision and the court passed an order to give his candidacy back.
Later, the EC moved the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court against the HC order and the court gave no order today. In this situation, the upazila parishad election was postponed until further direction.
Sources in Sarishabari upazila election office said two candidates were contesting for chairman, two for vice chairman, and two for women vice chairman posts in the polls.
However, voting in the first phase upazila parishad election is scheduled to take place on Wednesday.
