Professor Emeritus of Dhaka University Dr Atiur Rahman will receive an honorary doctorate from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) University of London in September this year.
Professor Adam Habib, vice chancellor of SOAS University of London, confirmed the matter in a letter on April 30.
According to the letter, Dr Atiur will get Doctor of Science (Economics) degree this year for his remarkable role in alleviating poverty as an economist and founder president of the internationally famed research and advocacy institution Unnayan Shamannay.
The letter also mentioned SOAS University authorities also specially considered Dr Atiur Rahman's leading role in 'pro-poverty government expenditure policy, environment and climate change, sustainable development and financial inclusion and innovative social activities during his tenure as the 10th Governor of Bangladesh Bank.
In 2023, four international personalities received such honorary doctorate from SOAS University. They are India's renowned screenwriter Javed Akhtar (Doctor of Literature), London-based culinary artist Asma Khan (Doctor of Science, Social Science), UK-based public health expert Professor Kevin Fenton (Doctor of Literature), and internally acclaimed Buddhist scholar Dzongsar Jamyang Khyentse Rinpoche (fellow).
It was learned that Dr Atiur Rahman will receive the honorary degree in the annual graduation ceremony of SOAS University of London in September 2024. The university authorities hope that young students in the program will be inspired by the outstanding contribution of Dr Atiur Rahman to Bangladesh and the world's development.
