Seven get death, 10 life in Habiganj murder

A court in Habiganj has sentenced seven people to death and 10 others to life-term imprisonment for the murder of a man.

The condemned convicts are Joynal Mia, Milon Ahmed, Abul Fazal, Kutub Uddin, Rafique Mia, Zakir Hossain, and Abbas Ussinn while the lifers are Sayed Ali, Mizaz Ali, Motlab Mia, Kutub Uddin, Abul Kalam, Ziaur Rahman, Ayat Ali (fugitive), Isak Ali, Joj Mia, and Ibrahim.

Additional District and Sessions Judge Court-1 Judge Azizul Haque delivered the verdict.

The court also fined them Tk 1 lakh each, additional public prosecutor Saleh Uddin Ahmed confirmed.

The case statement said Milon Ahmed and Harun Ahmed, former local union parishad members and residents of Hurgaon village in Sadar upazila, had been at loggerheads over establishing supremacy in the locality and the conflict intensified after the UP election in 2003.

In continuation, some 40-50 men led by Milon Ahmed equipped with locally made weapons attacked Harun Ahmed and seven to eight others on February 14 of the same year, leaving Harun dead on the spot. 

Later, his brother Sumon Ahmed filed a case against 47 people with Sadar Police Station.
