First consignment of Indian onions arrives

The first consignment of Indian onion arrived in Bangladesh through Darshana land port in Chuadanga on Sunday afternoon.

The consignment of 1,650 tons of onion reached the port by train around 5:30 pm, said the port station manager Mirza Kamrul Hasan.

The onion imported by the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) will be unloaded tonight and sent to different divisions and district towns, he said.

Atiar Rahman Habu, Darshana municipal mayor, and the port C&F Association general secretary, said the government decided to import onion from India to keep the local market stable during Ramadan.

Earlier today, State Minister for Commerce Ahasanul Islam Titu said the imported onions will be sold at Tk 40 per kg through the TCB in Dhaka and Chattogram.

On Wednesday, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) approved a proposal in principle for importing some 50,000 metric tons of onion from National Cooperative Exports Limited of India.
