S Alam sugar mills fire under control after 64 hours

The fire at S Alam Refined Sugar Industries Ltd in Chattogram was brought under control early Thursday, around 64 hours after it had broken out.

The Fire Service, Army, Navy, and Air Force personnel jointly brought the fire under control, said the Director General (DG) of the Fire Service and Civil Defence Department, Brigadier General Md Main Uddin.

Bringing the fire under control took more time because the raw materials at the mills were explosive substances, he said, adding that two members of the Fire Service received injuries in the incident.

The official said they managed to save around 80 percent of the 1 lakh metric tonnes of raw materials stoked at the mills for sugar production.

However, a five-member committee has been formed over the incident, he also said.

S Alam Group General Manager Akter Hossain said the fire has been brought with the frantic efforts of the Fire Service. The saved raw materials for sugar production would be used subject to the approval of the Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI).

Earlier on Monday afternoon, S Alam Refined Sugar Industries Ltd under Karnaphuli Police Station caught a fire.
