A court in Shariatpur on Tuesday sentenced five people to death for killing a woman after gang rape.
The condemned convicts are Nizam Bali, 45, Mohammad Ali, 35, Omar Faruque Bepari, 24, Al Amin Bepari, 20, and Ibrahim Molla, 21, residents of South Shitolkathi area in Damudya upazila.
The district Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal Judge, Md Sohel Ahmed, delivered the verdict. It also fined them Tk 1 lakh each.
The court public prosecutor advocate Sanal Mia confirmed the matter.
The case statement said police recovered the body of Firoza Begum, 55, resident of Bhuiyan Bazar area under Dhankathi union of the upazila, from a waterbody in Boro Naogaon area under the same union on April 21, 2019, a day after she had gone missing.
Her younger brother Lal Mia Sader filed a murder case against 13 known and 2-3 unknown people.
On April 28 of the year, police arrested Nizam Bali and on the following day, apprehended Omar Faruque and Mohammad Ali in the case.
Later, they confessed to the crime in court.
