The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) has ordered the closure of United Medical College Hospital in the capital’s Badda for operating illegally, without any licence.
The DGHS on Sunday issued an order signed by Dr Abu Hossain Mohammad Moinul Ahsan, Director of the health directorate’s hospitals and clinics department, after inspecting the hospital.
The move comes following the death of five-year-old Ayaan after a circumcision procedure by the hospital doctors recently.
According to the order, the DGHS visited the hospital on January 10 following a complaint filed by Ayaan’s father. During the inspection, the United Medical College Hospital authorities failed to show any licence issued by the directorate.

Besides, upon reviewing its online database, the DGHS saw that no institution named United Medical College Hospital had ever applied online for registration or licence to the directorate.
On 31 December, Ayaan was circumcised under full anesthesia at United Medical College Hospital in Satarkul Badda, allegedly without parental consent. He was transferred to the hospital’s Gulshan branch from there as he did not regain consciousness a few hours post-operation.
After seven days of keeping him on life support in the pediatric intensive care unit, the doctors declared Ayaan dead early on January 4.
Later, Ayaan’s family filed a written complaint with Badda Police Station over the matter.
