The Supreme Court on Wednesday upheld a government order that asked BRAC, world’s largest non-government organization, to pay tk 404.20 crore due income tax of last 11 years.
A five-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kuma Sinha delivered the verdict after hearing eleven separate appeals filed by the government against a previous High Court ruling in favour of BRAC.
On Dec 14, 2014, the HC declared BRAC as tax exempted considering it a charitable organisation.
The HC delivered the verdict following separate eleven income tax reference applications filed by BRAC challenging the eleven notices issued by the commissioner of tax seeking Tk 404.20 crore as income tax, between 1993-’94 and 2011-’12 tax years.
