Alal, Nirob among 8 jailed for 3 years

A Dhaka court has sentenced eight people including BNP Joint Secretary General Moazzem Hossain Alal and former Juba Dal President Saiful Islam Nirob in a case filed for torching a passenger bus in Dhanmondi during a hartal enforced by BNP and Jamaat-e-islami in 2013. 

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Jasim passed the order on Sunday. 

The other convicts are former Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal President Abdul Quader Jewel, Jamaat Dhaka city (south) secretary Dr Shafiqul Islam Masud and BNP leaders Harun Or Rashid, Obaidul Haque, Shahidul Islam Heera and Ibrahim. 

Alal’s lawyers Mosleh Uddin Jasim and Taherul Islam Touhid confirmed the matter to Jago News.

According to the case statement, the convicts set a passenger bus on fire on Sat Masjid road in the capital’s Dhanmondi on December 1, 2013. 

Later, the then Sub Inspector of Dhanmondi Police Station Abdullah Al Mamun filed a case in the incident.

On December 15, 2014, police submitted a charge sheet against them to the court.
