Independent candidate's activist hacked dead in Madaripur

An activist of an independent candidate was hacked to death allegedly by the supporters of an Awami League aspirant in Kalkini upazila of Madaripur on Saturday.

Dead Eskander Khan, 70, was a supporter and activist of independent candidate Mst Tahmina Begum of Madaripur-3 constituency in the 12th parliamentary election.

He was also a member of 8 no. ward Awami League under Lakshmipur union in the upazila.

Police and local sources said the men of Fazlul Haque Bepari, the former chairman of Lakshmipur union, and supporter of AL candidate of the constituency Dr Abdus Sobhan Mia Golap, hacked Eskander Khan in front of his home this morning, leaving him seriously injured.

Later, he was first rushed to Kalkini Upazila Health Complex and then, taken to Sher-E-Bangla Medical College Hospital, Barishal where he succumbed to his injuries.

Former chairman of the union Tofazzal Hossain Gendu Kazi said the men of AL supporter Fazlul Haque Bepari hacked Eskander Khan in front of his home and later, he died while undergoing treatment in Barishal.

In this regard, independent candidate Tahmina said the men of 'Boat' hacked one of her activists and they are doing that to create panic among voters.

Kalkini Police Station inspector (investigation) Md Margub Towhid said one Eskander Khan was killed over village conflict and political issues.

Additional police were deployed in the locality as a tense situation prevails there, he said, adding that legal action will be taken in this regard.
