BNP chairperson’s advisor Habib arrested

Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia’s advisor and the party’s vice chairman Md Habibur Rahman Habib.

RAB-2 Senior Assistant Director (Media) Shihab Karim confirmed the matter to the media on Tuesday morning.

He said Habib has been arrested from Mirpur DOHS area in Dhaka in a case filed for contempt of court.

Earlier on November 8, the High Court ordered the inspector general of police (IGP) to produce BNP leader Habib before the court on December 7 after he failed to make an appearance despite being summoned.

A High Court bench comprising Justice JBM Hassan and Justice Razik-Al-Jalil passed the order due to Habib failing to appear before the court to explain his position as to why contempt of court proceedings shall not be drawn against him for making derogatory remarks about HC Justice Md Akhtaruzzaman.

As a video of Habib’s speech circulated on YouTube on October 15 containing derogatory remarks on Justice Md Akhtaruzzaman, the attention of the Supreme Court was drawn to the matter.

After a hearing, the High Court summoned Habib on November 6 to explain why disciplinary action should not be taken against him for contempt of court.
