A court in Cumilla on Tuesday afternoon awarded a man death penalty for killing his wife for dowry in Nangalkot upazila around 13 years ago.
The district Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal Judge Mohammad Abdullah Al Mamun delivered the verdict against Abdur Rob, a resident of Bambatabaria in the upazila, the court's special public prosecutor Pradip Kumar Dutta told Jago News.
The court also fined him Tk 20,000, he said.
The case statement said Abdur Rob would torture his wife Jhorna Akter for dowry since their marriage and took dowry from his father-in-law's home on different occasions.
At one stage, he married another woman. After the second marriage, he again demanded dowry from Jhorna and threatened to kill her as she refused to give money.
On November 29, 2010, Abdur Rob's mother informed Jhorna's father over the phone that he murdered her after a quarrel between them.
On the following day, the victim's father filed a case with Nangalkot Police Station in this connection.
