Helena Jahangir denied bail, sent to jail in fraud case

A Dhaka court has denied the bail petition of businessperson-turned-politician Helena Jahangir and sent him to jail in a fraud case filed with Dhaka’s Pallabi Police Station.

Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Tofazzal Hossain passed the order on Thursday after she surrendered to the court. 

Earlier on March 20, the same court sentenced Helena Jahangir and four others to two years imprisonment in the case.

The court also fined Taka 2,000 each of the accused, in default they will have to stay in prison for two more months. 

The other four accused are Joyjatra TV’s general manager Hazera, chief news editor Kamruzzaman Arif, coordinator Sanaullah Nuri and staff reporter Mahfuz Shahriar.  

Joyjatra Television’s Bhola district correspondent Abdur Rahman Tuhin filed the fraud case on August 2, 2021.

On April 18 last year, the court framed charges against Helena and four others in the case.

On November 21 of 2021, Inspector Shahinur Islam of Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and also investigation officer of the case, submitted charge-sheet of the case against Helena and four others to the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court of Dhaka.
