The High Court has commuted the death sentences of seven jailed militants to imprisonment till death in the Holey Artisan Bakery attack case.
The convicts are - Jahangir Hossain alias Rajib Gandhi, Aslam Hossain alias Rash, Hadisur Rahman, Rakibul Hasan alias Regan, Abdus Sabur Khan alias Sohel Mahfuz, Shariful Islam Khaled, and Mamunur Rashid alias Ripon.
The bench of Justice Shahidul Karim and Justice Md Mostafizur Rahman delivered the verdict after rejecting separate appeals filed by the convicts challenging the lower court verdict.
On July 1, 2016, five militants took hostages and opened fire on the Holey Artisan Bakery in Gulshan, killing 20 people including foreigners.
All the five militants who carried out the attack were killed in the commando operation. They were identified as Mir Sameh Mobassher, Rohan Ibne Imtiaz alias Mamun, Nibras Islam, Khairul Islam Payel and Shafiqul Islam Uzzal.
A special tribunal in Dhaka led by Judge M Mojibur Rahman sentenced seven accused persons to death in the Holey Artisan Cafe terror attack case on November 27 in 2019.
