Seventeen people were killed and many others injured when a container train and a passenger train collided in Bhairab of Kishoreganj on Monday afternoon, reports BSS.
"Seventeen dead bodies were so far recovered from the wreckage. Casualties could rise as the rescue operation is going on," said Police Super of Kishoreganj Russell Sheikh.
A total of 14 units of the fire service are conducting rescue operation, said Bangladesh Fire Service and Civil Defence media chief Shahjahan Sikder.
The government has deployed three platoons of BGB to assist the rescue operation.
A container train headed towards Chattogram collided with the Dhaka-bound Egarosindhur Express around 3.30pm, Bhairab Railway Police Station duty officer Sirajul Islam told the media.
Meanwhile, locomaster, assistant locomaster, and guard of the freight train involved in the Bhairab collision have been suspended.
Bangladesh railway (BR) Director General Quamrul Ahsan said that they have taken the steps following preliminary investigation.
He also said the BR has formed two separate committees to investigate into the incident.
Dhaka Divisional office of Bangladesh Railway has formed a four-member committee to investigate the train accident.
