Tipu-Prity murder: Court sends Jubo League leader Shamsul to jail

Shamsul Haider Uchchhal, a former ward leader of Jubo League, has been sent to jail in the case over the murder of AL leader Jahidul Islam Tipu and college student Samia Afrin Prity.

The court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Saiful Islam passed the order on Wednesday after he had surrendered before the court through his lawyer and prayed for bail.

Earlier on June 20, the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Rajesh Chowdhury took cognizance of a chargesheet against 33 people in the case and issued an arrest warrant against nine of them.

Besides Shamsul, Dhaka South City Corporation's 10 No. Ward Councillor and Awami League leader Maruf Ahmed Mansur, AL's Dhaka South City unit expelled organizing secretary Ashraf Talukder, and several leaders of Bangladesh Chhatra League, Juba League, Jatiya Party, are among those against whom the chargesheet was accepted.

Tipu, the former general secretary of Motijheel Thana Awami League, was on his microbus destined for his Khilgaon home on the night of March 24 last year. He was shot dead by a masked assailant in the capital's Shahjahanpur area as his vehicle got stuck in traffic.

Rickshaw passenger Samia Afran Prity was also shot by stray bullets and died on the spot. Tipu's driver Munna was shot in his hand in the incident.

Tipu's wife Farhana Islam Dolly filed a murder case with Shahjahanpur Police Station.
