The government has imposed a ban on hilsha fishing for 22 days from October 12 to November 2 to ensure the safe spawning of the fish.
Catching, selling, transporting, stocking and exchanging hilsa during the period will remain banned.
Fisheries and Livestock Minister SM Rezaul Karim said this in a meeting of the National Task Force on Hilsa Resource Development on Wednesday afternoon.
As per law, hilsa fishing during the period is a punishable offense and those violating the law will face up to two years in jail or up to Tk 5000 fine or both punishment.
