Obaidul Hassan made chief justice of Bangladesh

Justice Obaidul Hassan of the Supreme Court's Appellate Division has been appointed as the country's 24th chief justice of Bangladesh.

President Mohammed Shahabuddin appointed him as the chief justice according to Article No. 95(1) of the Constitution, a gazette notification issued by Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Ministry said on Tuesday.

Incumbent Chief Justice Hasan Foez Siddique is retiring on September 25.

Born in 1959 in Mohanganj upazila of Netrakona district, Justice Obaidul Hassan obtained BSS, MSS and LLB degrees from Dhaka University.

In 1986, he received the certificate of district bar as a lawyer.

He was listed as an advocate of the High Court Division in 1988 and in the Appellate Division in 2005.

He served as assistant attorney general and deputy attorney general from 1996 to 2001.

He became an additional justice of HC in 2009 and was appointed as permanent justice in the same division in 2011.
