Momotaz gets bail in West Bengal court after surrender

A court in West Bengal of India has granted bail to Bangladesh's singer and lawmaker Momotaz Begom in a case filed for allegedly breaching an agreement and cheating.

Judge Alkesh Das of Berhampore Court passed the order on Friday after she had surrendered before the court following an arrest warrant issued against her.

Earlier, lawyer Debangshu Sengupta for Momotaz prayed bail for her while the lawyer for the plaintiff opposed the bail arguing that she cannot get bail as charges were framed against her.

After a hearing, the judge gave her bail and set September 20 for the next hearing.

Plaintiff Shaktishangker Bagchi, however, said he would file a case against the singer in the Calcutta High Court on September 11.

Event management organizer Bagchi lodged the case against Momotaz in 2008 which stated that she signed a written agreement with him to sing songs in different programs from 2004 to 2008.

As per the treaty, she was supposed to perform in a program at Berhampore in West Bengal in 2008 and for this, she was paid Rs 14 lakh but she didn't perform in the program and also did not give back the money.
