A union parishad member was hacked to death in Laksam upazila of Cumilla on Thursday for obstructing drug consumption.
Deceased Abul Kashem, 52, was 8 No. Ward member under Mudaffarganj Dakshin Union and vice president of the ward unit Awami League.
Mudaffarganj Dakshin Union Awami League president Md Kabir Hossain Mazumder confirmed the matter to Jago News.
Quoting locals, he said Razib Hossain, 30, a resident of Shriang Dakshin Para under the union, has allegedly been selling and consuming drug in the locality for long.
Two days ago, Abul Kashem warned him about this, and they locked into an altercation at Shriang Bazar around 3 pm over the matter.
At one stage, Razib hacked the UP member, leaving him seriously injured.
He was rushed to Laksam Upazila Health Complex where the on-duty doctor declared him dead.
Laksam Police Station officer in-charge Abdullah Al Mahfuz said they were trying to detain accused Razib.
